THE THREE REGIONS OF FOOD ALCHEMY

Nourishing the Body’s Natural Intelligence

1. UPPER ALCHEMY

Clarity & Calm (Heaven | Mind | Breath)

For mental spaciousness, emotional steadiness, and nervous system harmony.

Purpose

To gently descend scattered energy, soften agitation, clear mental fog, and allow breath to become a bridge between thought and presence.

Just as Upper Body movement emphasises stillness within motion, Upper Alchemy nourishment emphasises lightness without depletion.

Food Qualities

Light, subtle, gently cooling or neutral, calming, descending in nature.
Bitter and mildly sweet flavors are used to clear excess heat from the Heart/Mind and settle emotional turbulence.

Examples

    • Lightly steamed leafy greens

    • Bitter melon, dandelion, or chrysanthemum greens

    • Pear or lotus seed congee

    • Gentle herbal teas

    • Small amounts of bitter foods (dark chocolate, cacao, herbal infusions)

Avoid

Heavy, greasy, overly spicy, or stimulating foods that push energy upward, disturb sleep, or amplify anxiety.

2. MIDDLE ALCHEMY

Harmony & Flow (Human | Core | Vitality)

For digestive balance, emotional warmth, hormonal rhythm, and daily resilience.

Purpose

To harmonise the center — the crossroads of breath, digestion, emotion, and action — so nourishment transforms smoothly into energy without stagnation.

Just as Middle Body movement emphasises circular flow and breath-synchronised motion, Middle Alchemy nourishment emphasises warmth, rhythm, and gentle stability.

Food Qualities

Neutral, warm, cooked, grounding, easy to digest.
Foods that strengthen the Earth element, build Qi, and support emotional steadiness without heaviness.

Examples

    • Cooked grains: rice, millet, oats
    • Root vegetables: pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato
    • Light stews and soups
    • Gently warming spices: ginger, cinnamon
    • Simple, warm breakfasts that stabilise digestion

Avoid

Raw, icy, overly sugary, ultra-processed, or heavy foods that weaken digestive fire, create bloating, fatigue, or emotional dullness.

3. LOWER ALCHEMY

Grounding & Strength (Earth | Roots | Longevity)

For deep vitality, bone strength, resilience, and long-term energy reserves.

Purpose

To sink energy downward, nourish foundational vitality (Jing), strengthen the body’s root system, and support endurance across seasons of life.

Just as Lower Body movement emphasises rooting, weight, and structural alignment, Lower Alchemy nourishment emphasises density, minerals, warmth, and depth.

 

Food Qualities

Dense, warming, mineral-rich, salty or umami, deeply nourishing, grounding in nature.

Examples

    • Bone broths and slow-cooked stews

    • Seaweed, miso, fermented black beans

    • Walnuts, black sesame seeds, kidney beans

    • Long-simmered root vegetables

    • Foods traditionally associated with kidney and ancestral vitality

Avoid

Overly light, raw, diuretic, or excessively detox-oriented foods that scatter energy and deplete deep reserves.
